Can TL develop a completely custom product?
Custom development starts with the intended use and a manufacturing approach that can meet the requirement.
The short answer
Yes, where suitable manufacturing capability is available. A project can begin with an idea, drawing, reference image, existing product, physical sample or technical specification. The development path depends on what needs to be designed, tested and approved.
Turn an idea into a usable brief
The supplier needs to understand what the product must do, how it will be used and which features are essential. Dimensions, materials, quantity, branding, performance and delivery requirements help establish a practical starting point.
A reference product can guide a discussion, but it does not automatically define the final specification. Confirm which parts of the reference you want to retain and which need to change. Any rights or permissions needed to reproduce designs or branding should also be clear.
A development path with review points
The work may move through requirement review, supplier selection, design discussions, samples or prototypes, revisions and production approval. Some products also require tooling, technical evaluation or project-specific testing.
Custom furniture, packaging and branded merchandise may use different development methods from a vehicle, equipment item or accommodation fit-out. The process should suit the manufacturing category rather than forcing every product into the same sequence.
Where custom projects need care
- Unresolved dimensions, materials or performance requirements
- Design changes after a sample or drawing has been approved
- Assuming a visual sample proves production or compliance performance
- Tooling, quantity or timing that does not suit the manufacturing process
- Different expectations about what is included in the supplier’s quotation
How TL supports this
TL coordinates supplier discussions, specification clarification, samples and production follow-up through our Shanghai team. You remain involved in the approvals. Our modular accommodation and electric coach cases show custom supply built around project requirements, rather than a fixed catalogue. Feasibility and responsibilities are reviewed for each brief.
