How long does a sourcing or custom manufacturing project take?

The useful timeline is the one built around your product, approval steps and delivery requirements.

The short answer

There is no reliable single lead time for all sourcing projects. Timing depends on the product, development work, supplier readiness, approvals, production quantity and delivery arrangements. A straightforward existing item can follow a different schedule from a custom vehicle or production line.

What needs time before production

  • Clarifying the brief and supplier capability
  • Design development and technical discussions
  • Samples, revisions and client approval
  • Tooling or production setup where needed
  • Testing, documentation and approval requirements

What affects production and delivery

Material availability, supplier capacity, order quantity and seasonal production conditions can affect manufacturing. Packing, consolidation and shipping add further stages, and freight booking depends on realistic readiness information.

For planning purposes, separate an indicative supplier lead time from a complete project timeline. Confirm what starts the quoted production period, what is excluded and which approvals or payments must occur first.

A documented complex-project example

TL’s custom electric coach project took approximately 18 months from design and compliance coordination through to delivery in Perth. That was the overall project program, not a standard duration for ADR approval alone.

It shows why engineering, approval-related requirements, manufacturing and transport may need to be planned together for a complex product. It does not mean every vehicle or equipment project will take the same time.

How TL supports this

We coordinate supplier information and identify the main dependencies in the agreed scope. Early discussions can help distinguish firm dates from estimates and highlight decisions that need to be made before the next stage.

Tell us about an installation, event or operating date at the first enquiry. We can discuss the required sequence and current supplier position, but do not offer a universal delivery guarantee for every brief.
