What is the difference between a factory and a trading company?

Both models can serve a useful role. The right choice depends on manufacturing needs and the supply scope.

The short answer

A factory manufactures products directly. A trading company sources and coordinates products from one or more manufacturers. Some businesses combine both roles. Neither label, on its own, tells you whether the supplier is the right fit for your project.

Two different operating models

Factory

Often useful when a project needs direct access to a particular manufacturing process.

  • Produces goods using its own manufacturing capability
  • Can discuss production methods and technical changes
  • May have a narrower product or process range

Trading company

Can be useful when the requirement spans products or factories that need to be brought together.

  • Coordinates supply from one or more manufacturers
  • May offer a broader product range
  • Should clearly explain where production takes place

What to ask either type of supplier

Confirm who manufactures the product, who holds the specification, and who is responsible for samples, inspections and corrective action. A quotation should identify the materials, configuration and commercial terms clearly.

If a supplier uses subcontractors or separate facilities, understand which stages are carried out where. This can matter for factory access, consistency across orders and the relevance of test reports.

Why a multi-category project is different

A modular accommodation program may combine building materials, glazing, joinery, furniture and room furnishings. Those categories do not necessarily come from one factory. Coordination across specialist suppliers can be more important than finding a single business that claims to manufacture everything.

A factory is not automatically the lowest overall-cost option, and a trading company is not automatically unsuitable. Assess the proposed scope, capability, transparency and execution arrangements together.

How TL supports this

TL helps clients understand the supplier model and coordinate the manufacturing categories needed for the brief. Our Shanghai team can support direct discussions with factories while keeping specifications, production information and quality requirements connected across suppliers.
